Step 327: Sometimes, text before you call

adulting:

image

This is a thoughtful thing to do for people who might be expecting bad or serious news. My family got in the habit when Grannybarb was really sick, and every time my phone rang I was terrified that it was a Serious Call.

So when we just wanted to chat, my mom and sisters and would text the other person ahead of time, so we knew that it wasn’t serious and we didn’t have to drop everything to take it/steel ourselves emotionally/get to a place where we could flip out if need be.

This is so cool! But what country are they from? “Africa” is really vague.

Their names are Duro-Aina Adebola, Akindele Abiola, Faleke Oluwatoyin, and Bello Eniola and they’re from Lagos, Nigeria. There’s a neat video about them here.

#when will people start giving names to young non-white scientists??#bc that shit is getting old

boost the fuck out of this, and make sure you include their goddamn names and country of origin.

Just married!
This is Vivian (91) and Alice (90), and they just got married. They’ve been dating for 72 years, and together they have visited all 50 US states, all the provinces of Canada, and been twice to England. Quote Alice: “We’ve had a good time”.

I don’t usually comment on posts but THIS IS SO IMPORTANT. You know why? Because I have never seen media containing an old lesbian couple before. I’ve never seen media containing old gay or otherwise Not Straight couples before. It means so much to me to see that these two women have been together for 72 years.
Part of it is agism, part of it is homophobia I’m sure. Part of it might be that I’m not looking in the right places. But I have never seen a long lasting and happy homosexual relationship. I have never been able to picture a long lasting homosexual relationship.
In media, even alternative media, queer couples don’t last 72 years. Straight couples are the ones who do that. We die of AIDS. We break up. We kill each other, kill ourselves. We end up put in hetero relationships and called straight. We have one night stands. We are just now getting to being treated respectfully and like anything but the butt of a joke, or a pseudobiblical warning.
Here’s to more long and happy queer relationships. Bless these women, and wish them a happy marriage.

Let’s stop HIV in New York City

  • If you are HIV-negative, PEP and PrEP can help you stay that way.
  • If you are HIV-positive, PEP and PrEP can help protect your partners.

Daily PrEP

PrEP is a daily pill that can help keep you HIV-negative as long as you take it every day.

  • Ask your doctor if PrEP (Pre-exposure Prophylaxis) may be right for you.
  • Condoms give you additional protection against HIV, other sexually transmitted infections, and unintended pregnancy.

Emergency PEP

If you are HIV-negative and think you were exposed to HIV, immediately go to a clinic or emergency room and ask for PEP (Post-exposure  Prophylaxis).

  • PEP can stop HIV if started within 36 hours of exposure.
  • You continue taking PEP for 28 days.

Many insurance plans including Medicaid cover PEP and PrEP. Assistance may be available if you are uninsured. Visit NYC Health’s website to find out where to get PrEP or PEP in New York City.

This is such a giant step that barely any people know about it seems, so amazing to see progress in the treatment of HIV

The NDP issued a statement saying “the agreement will give China’s state-controlled companies the same protection under the law as private Canadian companies.

"In effect, it will give China access to, and control over, some of Canada’s natural resources for the next 31 years."

NDP trade critic Don Davies put forward a motion in the House of Commons in April 22, 2013, calling on the government not to ratify the agreement. The motion was defeated.

Green Party Leader Elizabeth May in a statement on Wednesday said the FIPA with China was a “sell out.”

Deputy Green Party Leader Bruce Hyer added cabinet is, “signing of this deal behind closed doors, instead of giving Parliament a say, is not just undemocratic in itself … it is also a profound attack of Canada’s sovereignty as a nation, and an erosion of the rights of all Canadians to make democratic decisions about our economy, environment, and energy.”

Heart attacks symptoms are different for women. I recently learned this.

Everyone should know these things.

thanks to mainstream media and being unable to show breasts on TV, way too few people know about female signs of cardiac distress, and impending heart attacks. they only know about the “pain in the left arm” male symptom.

i had all these symptoms once and they sent me right to hospital
it was scary bc i didnt know these were the symptoms for female heart issues

Please, please, PLEASE, reblog this. i don’t know if I did save or called false alarm, with my boss’ life tonight. I felt I was being a bit paranoid, overreacting, but I told Mirage my thoughts and he, after reading over the article I showed him, immediately sprung into action and then shooed her off to the hospital. I don’t know if I did or not, but I knew she’d been super stressed. She’d off-handedly commented on her arm tingling and I asked her if she felt queasy on a hunch. I went to look at the symptoms and we went from there.
